This entire week has been a math only week in our homeschool. It has been lots of fun…(most of the time, minus a few tears from my oldest).
I came across a great post (at Our Journey Westward) about doing a floor graph to help younger children understand how to create a graph on their own. Wow, did this really help cement the concepts of graphing into their minds.
We created a simple graph using my assortment of socks (I love socks).
The kids figured out ways to sort the socks into groups based on likeness.
They came up with:
Darks
Toesies
Stripes
Designs
& Plain
Then I walked them through the process of creating the graph right on the floor. We stacked up index cards to show the number of each kind of sock on the graph.
As we went through each step on the floor, we also used graph paper and copied the same steps on the paper.
The end result was a nice, neat floor graph and a paper graph.
Next week the kids will be expected to create a graph by themselves using and sorting candy into different groups. We will work on this every week until making graphs is a breeze!

Great job! It looks like the kiddos had a ton of fun, too! This reminds me that we probably ought to do some more concrete graphing soon.
